Schizophrenia

Making sense of fragmented light.

Schizophrenia is a complex condition that affects how a person thinks, feels and perceives reality. With the right care, many people live full, meaningful lives alongside it.

What it is

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects about 1 in 100 people. It is characterised by a disruption in the way the brain processes information, which can lead to hallucinations, delusions and disorganised thinking.

It is not a 'split personality'. With early intervention, medication, therapy and strong support, most people manage their symptoms and build stable, connected lives.

How it shows up

  • Hallucinations (hearing or seeing things others don't)
  • Delusions — fixed beliefs not grounded in reality
  • Disorganised speech or thinking
  • Reduced emotional expression or motivation
  • Difficulty with memory and focus
  • Withdrawal from social contact

What helps

  • Antipsychotic medication, carefully monitored
  • Specialist psychotherapy and family intervention
  • Vocational and social skills support
  • Coordinated specialty care for early psychosis
