Understanding

Bipolar Disorder

Living between two horizons.

Bipolar disorder involves intense shifts in mood, energy and activity — from the highs of mania to the lows of depression. Understanding the pattern is the first step to stability.

What it is

Bipolar disorder is a lifelong mood disorder marked by alternating periods of elevated mood (mania or hypomania) and depression. The shifts are more extreme than the ordinary ups and downs everyone experiences.

With accurate diagnosis, mood-stabilising treatment and self-awareness, people with bipolar disorder lead highly productive and creative lives.

How it shows up

  • Mania: elevated mood, racing thoughts, reduced need for sleep
  • Hypomania: milder elevated mood with increased energy
  • Depressive episodes: low mood, fatigue, hopelessness
  • Impulsive or risky behaviour during highs
  • Difficulty functioning during extremes

What helps

  • Mood stabilisers and monitored medication
  • Psychotherapy and psychoeducation
  • Sleep, routine and trigger tracking
  • Crisis plan for early warning signs
