Understanding

OCD

Loosening the loop.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder traps people in cycles of intrusive thoughts and repetitive actions. Understanding the loop is the beginning of breaking it.

What it is

OCD involves unwanted, distressing thoughts (obsessions) paired with urges to repeat certain behaviours or mental rituals (compulsions) to relieve the anxiety they cause.

It is far more than being 'tidy' or 'organised'. With specialist therapy most people reduce the grip of the cycle and reclaim their time and attention.

How it shows up

  • Intrusive, unwanted thoughts or images
  • Urge to repeat checking, cleaning or counting
  • Mental rituals to 'neutralise' fear
  • Intense anxiety when rituals are interrupted
  • Time lost to compulsions each day
  • Distress about losing control

What helps

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Mindfulness and acceptance approaches
  • Medication (SSRIs) where appropriate
