Anxiety

When the wind won't settle.

Anxiety is a natural response to stress — but when it lingers and grows, it can become overwhelming. It is also one of the most treatable mental health conditions.

What it is

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health conditions worldwide. They involve intense, persistent worry or fear that is out of proportion to the situation and interferes with daily life.

Forms include generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety and phobias. Most people respond well to therapy, and many recover fully.

How it shows up

  • Restlessness or feeling on edge
  • Rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Panic attacks
  • Avoidance of triggers

What helps

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Exposure therapy for phobias
  • Mindfulness and breathing techniques
  • Medication where appropriate
